Meibomian Gland Dysfunction
When Dry Eye Keeps Coming Back, Your Eyelid Glands May Be Part of the Reason
Meibomian Gland Dysfunction, or MGD, can affect the quality of the oils that help keep your tears stable and your eyes comfortable.
When these small glands in your eyelids become blocked or do not function properly, your tears may evaporate too quickly. This can contribute to dryness, burning, irritation, watering, redness and fluctuating vision.
At In2Eyes, we do not simply treat the symptom. We assess your eyelids, tear film and meibomian glands to better understand what may be contributing to your discomfort.
Your optometrist can then explain what we find and recommend the appropriate next step based on your individual eyes.

Your Eyelids Matter
Healthy glands help support a stable tear film.
Understanding MGD
Small Glands That Play an Important Role in Your Tear Film
Meibomian glands are located along your upper and lower eyelids.
These glands produce oils that become part of your tear film. The oily layer helps slow the evaporation of your tears and supports comfortable, stable vision.
When the glands become blocked or the oil they produce changes in quality, the tear film may become less stable.
This is known as Meibomian Gland Dysfunction and it can be an important contributor to ongoing dry eye symptoms.
What You May Notice
MGD Can Feel Different from Person to Person
Recurring discomfort does not always have one simple cause.
Your symptoms, lifestyle, health history and eyelid condition can all help your optometrist understand what may be contributing to the problem.

Factors That May Contribute
Assessment Before Treatment
We Look at What Is Happening, Not Just How Your Eyes Feel
Symptoms tell us that something may be wrong. A detailed assessment helps us understand what may be contributing.
At In2Eyes, your optometrist may examine your eyelids and tear film and assess how effectively your meibomian glands are functioning.
We also use the Oculus Keratograph as part of our dry eye assessment technology when appropriate.
Your optometrist will explain what we find and discuss which management or treatment options may be appropriate for you.
Your Treatment Plan
Treatment Should Match What We Find
There is no single treatment that is right for every person with MGD.
Your optometrist will recommend appropriate in-practice treatment and home-care support based on your assessment findings and individual needs.
Blephasteam
Controlled moist warming may be used to help prepare the eyelids and meibomian glands as part of an MGD treatment plan.
Meibomian Gland Expression
For suitable patients, your optometrist may recommend expression to help address obstructed meibomian glands.
Home Care
Your plan may include appropriate warming, eyelid hygiene, blinking advice, environmental changes or recommended eye drops.
